Review: Thundercat Pub and Diner, Glasgow

Those of you who know me will be acutely aware of my love of ‘90s music. The recent announcement of an Oasis reunion has awoken our love of guitar music, just as the Manchester band did 30 years ago with their debut release, Definitely Maybe. Watching live music in Glasgow is always a treat and, while Ride may not be the most obvious name that comes to mind from that era, they are one my favourite indie groups. With the prospect of several pints being sunk, we’d need adequate sustenance beforehand with Thundercat being the support act.

Part of the Buck’s Bar group, Thundercat is a spin-off pub-cum-diner that specialises in deep pan sharing pizzas, dogs and burgers with a dirty side to them.  It offers similar deals like a £3 drinks menu, discounted cocktails on off-peak days, as well as a cheap express lunch. The menu itself is sensibly priced and the interior has a quirky rock ‘n’ roll vibe to it; this hospitality group are brilliant at creating an electric atmosphere in their venues.

Now, I’m a sucker for a chicken parm – one of my favourite comfort foods – and went for that straight off the bat, priced at a reasonable £12.95. Several of those bad boy pizzas started to arrive at neighbouring tables, making me question my choices. Luckily, my sandwich didn’t let me down – far from it. A pleasingly succulent slab of chicken with a suitably crunchy coating was enhanced by a tangy tomato sauce.  Not sure the pepperoni was necessary, but it did bring an element of heat to the table. The crunchy onions and lettuce contributed freshness, and the durable milk bun was most notable.

Sarah opted for the ‘Michigan Dog’ (£9.95). The Frankfurter was good quality with a great deal of meatiness, housed in a quality brioche bun that held up well. The chilli was chunky and had a smoky vibe to it with just about the right volume of spice to it.

Now the tater tots.  We need to talk about the tater tots. We selected the garlic and herb butter option with pecorino cheese (£5.50). There is nothing worse than ordering something with a promised accompaniment only to find said seasoning is nowhere near in proportion to the vessel that’s carrying it.  However, there were no issues here with oodles of garlic butter drowning those delectably moreish potato spheres to the max. They should actually offer them in one of those milk buns because they would FLY out.

The Buck’s lot really know what their audience wants and how to execute it well, and at a very reasonable price to boot. This was one support act well worth turning up for and I should send my apologies to any fellow gig goers who may have encountered my unashamed garlic breath! Thankfully, Ride were as good as the food.
