Review: Pizza Geeks, Leith, Edinburgh

AFTER TRAWLING AROUND street food markets, Pizza Geeks firmly established themselves on the independent Edinburgh pizza scene with permanent premises in Haymarket back in 2018. Their latest venture, following on from taking kitchen residence at Cask Smuggler’s on Princes Street last year, sees their Neapolitan-style pizzas hit Leith.

Having secured the site on The Shore previously inhabited by East Pizzas, Pizza Geeks plan to expand the kitchen at the back of the site to be able to cater for the Leith market.  However, competition in this area is fierce with the long-established Origano and the fantastic Razzo ruling the roust in the area. So, what will set Pizza Geeks apart?

On researching their background, I found their website both good fun and extremely functional. Pizzas are named after Marvel characters, films, and computer game legends. The menu serves up classic combos you’d expect to find in any decent pizzeria, mixed with a few obscure ones; their ‘The Braveheart’ contains both haggis and Stornoway black pudding, for example. Worth mentioning is that Pizza Geeks run a ‘Pizza for the Peoplescheme where you can forward just £4 to provide a pizza for a vulnerable person in the local community; they’ve delivered over an incredible 11,000 so far.

I opted for the ‘Johnny Blaze’ (£8) which involves pepperoni, red onion, jalapenos, and chilli flakes on a tomato base with mozzarella.  First thing to expect with top pizza is a beery hit when opening the box – tick.  Toppings were notably generous, which often lacks in other establishments.  The centre was soupy as you’d expect from a Neapolitan.  The tomato sauce was tangy and offset the heat from spicy components and the garlic dip (£1.50) was heavenly.

Sarah ordered the ‘Millennium Chicken’ priced at £9.  Another suitably blistered crust housed a richly flavoured pulled chicken, zingy red onions and bitter sweetness of juicy peppers that worked well with the tangy hint of BBQ sauce.  Thoroughly enjoyable.

I was really chuffed with these pizzas. The dough was expertly proved, and cooked with quality ingredients and a range of quirky options leaving a sense of intrigue.  Pizza Geek’s unique style will definitely enhance the Leith food scene and cement the area as Edinburgh’s premier pizza location.
