IT WOULDN’T BE an exaggeration to say that Razzo pizzeria in
Leith has hit the ground running since opening in May. My social media feeds
were full of positive mentions for this tiny place and it’s become my go-to
venue for a cheap, speedy feed over the past few months.
Leith isn’t exactly short on quality pizza joints. From the
long-established Origano to East Pizzas and fellow newcomer La Riva, we are truly spoiled for
choice. One advantage to Razzo is that it’s currently BYOB, although I believe
an application to sell booze has been submitted. Razzo is on Great Junction
Street, which isn’t exactly a culinary hot spot, but with Aurora and the excellent Borough
a few minutes away, it’s certainly on the rise.
After a busy Saturday getting organised for our trip to
Porto, we made the short trip from our flat to the packed-out restaurant. The
interior is modern and the gold pizza oven to the rear instantly gets your
attention. On our first visit here, there were only two kitchen staff, but that
seems to have at least doubled since then. If you’re lucky enough you can get a
glimpse of neatly shaped dough proving in the drawer – no pre-made cardboard
pizza bases here.
Razzo, Italian
We split a starter of mozzarella frita for just £3.50. This
came with not a hint of grease and a perfect crunchy texture. The cheese inside was wonderfully flavoured
and suitably stringy. There was a tasty
tomato sauce to dip, too.
I ordered the prosciutto crudo for a modest £8. The edges
were suitably blistered, and I’ll never get tired of that beefy whiff when your
pizza arrives. There was a generous amount of salty ham and Parmesan, and the
tomato sauce was tangy and slightly sweet. The fiore de latte was deliciously
milky. My only criticism of their pizzas is that they can be a little soggy in
the middle.
Sarah ordered a classic margarita for £6. The mozzarella was
perfectly gooey and she agreed that the tomato element was excellent. A
sprinkling of basil was delicious along with the added garlic and chilli (there
are several other options), which are free of charge and a neat tough.
I should mention that they also offer
a range of pasta dishes alongside the pizza menu, which we have enjoyed on
previous visits. I grudgingly pay top dollar in Italian restaurants for a basic
bowl of pasta and sauce, but this place is light on the wallet for such a high
standard of pasta cooking.
For the price, Razzo offers outstanding value for
money. I’d be surprised if the cost
didn’t creep up as it becomes more established – and I believe it will. Quality
ingredients and giving the dough time to fulfil its full potential create a
winning recipe at this nifty little pizza joint. Believe the hype.
